in the space in between.

Mixed State is a Brooklyn-based alternative jazz band with a distinct electro-acoustic sound. The quartet performs original music and aims to further the legacy of women jazz composers. No sound is off limits with Danielle Sopchak on flute, Diego Retana on guitar, Teresa Sanchez on bass, and Jeremy Duvall on drums. There’s a degree of madness within their sound, pulling improvisational inspiration from their unique blend of genre-breaking. Classical, straight-ahead, to punk influences, Mixed State’s music is played for the people, and evokes emotions as complex as the lives of listeners.

Mixed State’s debut album, ‘espresso depresso,’ featuring Gina Benalcázar-López on trombone, creates a story exploring the one and only consistent theme in life - inconsistency. It comprises ‘Suite de Ballet’ by Ralph Vaughan Williams, new standards by Brandee Younger and Maurice Brown, an original questioning samba, and melodic rock-meets-jazz compositions. Recorded at Rad Hazard Studios in NYC.
